Experience Japan through the eyes of Viking guests

My Viking Story
Cooking Room

With Chef Sogi from the popular cooking class. Making a Hexenhaus (gingerbread house) during Advent instantly put me in the Christmas spirit. His stories from his training days in France were fascinating too. #MyVikingStory

Deck 2

I noticed something while doing my deck walk. Holding onto the railing, polished beautifully by the crew again this morning, there he was — gazing out at the sea. Do you love this ship too? By the time I came back around, he had already flown away. On a sunny morning aboard the Yidun, even a stink bug looks beautiful... #MyVikingStory

In Front of My Room

From the very first day, Lynna ♥️ & Tita kept our room perfectly ✨ with wonderful smiles and thoughtful care 🍀 Thank you so much! You took such great care of us! At some point, every time I saw Lynna's charming smile, she started to feel like a daughter to me... (haha) I'm so glad my cruise debut ✨ was on Viking Yidun 🚢 ♥️♥️ I hope to see you again ♪ #MyVikingStory

My Room, Lobby, etc.

I was so happy to sail during the Christmas season. The hospitality exceeded my expectations — the restaurants and staff were amazing! Flavio, Kokoro, Marvin — I hope to see you again! ❣️ #MyVikingStory

1872

I went to 1872 every night. Marvin would bring us oolong tea without us even ordering as soon as he saw our faces 😊 He gave us the best hospitality with a smile, trying so hard to speak Japanese. All the staff are working so hard 👍 I even got to meet astronaut Mr. Yamazaki here. Forgetting time, forgetting age, dancing until late every night! This kind of experience is only possible on a cruise. Please come back again! A heartfelt thank you to the wonderful staff!! #MyVikingStory

At Sea After Departing Toba, Aquavit Terrace

A blue moon on the final night of Viking Yidun's Japan cruise. The sunset just before was beautiful, but the blue moon over the sea was absolutely stunning. I'm looking forward to saying "Welcome back" to Viking Cruises in 2028 🎶 #MyVikingStory

I would love to sail on Viking Yidun again and make new memories. There's no other ship quite like this one. I hear it's coming back to Japan in 2028 — I can't wait! #MyVikingStory

Niimi Nankichi Memorial Museum

I found this exhibit at the memorial museum my friend took me to while docked at Yokkaichi Port ✨ Learning that young Niimi Nankichi, who aspired to become a children's story writer nearly 100 years ago, also dreamed of sea voyages made me see the Yidun waiting for me at the port as more than just a ship... #MyVikingStory

Atrium

We couldn't land at Yakushima, so we unexpectedly found ourselves with time on board. Puzzle lovers naturally gathered — some stopping by to place a piece, others offering words of encouragement, and staff members kindly shining lights on our work. Before we knew it, we'd formed a circle that felt like a school club activity. Instead of Yakushima, I came home with a wonderful memory of warm connections with people. It was a moment that reminded me that travel memories are made not just by places, but by people. #MyVikingStory

Shodoshima

Shodoshima has no large port, so cute tender boats shuttled us between the Viking and the shore. This photo is the last tender returning to the ship. #MyVikingStory

Laundry

Normally you come home from a trip with a mountain of laundry... But there's free laundry on every deck, so I washed everything before heading home. While waiting, I had fun chatting with all kinds of people and made new friends. #MyVikingStory

Will I be able to reunite with these people on Viking Neptune? That's... what I hope. #MyVikingStory

Viking Farewell Reception

There's so much I want to write, but it's already been a year. Here are two excerpts from my diary-style cruise journal: 1. Exploring the ship right after boarding — The decor reflects a Scandinavian lifestyle, with a calm and refined atmosphere. Tables and chairs everywhere, so you can enjoy a relaxed, elegant feeling anywhere on the ship. It's quiet, with music gently playing in the background. A wonderful, peaceful ambiance. As soon as you sit down, someone asks if you'd like something to drink. All the staff speak Japanese, and everyone is so friendly. 2. Final night at 1872, which I visited every evening — Taichi was there with his fascinating space stories. I sat with a couple from Nerima. They said they've been on many cruises, but Viking was the best. Others I met in the sauna and at the bar said the same thing. This was my first cruise, so I couldn't compare, but I agree — it really was wonderful! So comfortable! Meeting such amazing crew made for nine luxurious, fulfilling days away from everyday life. #MyVikingStory

Bridge

I've sailed on many ships, but I think Viking Yidun is the best of them all. First, on my second voyage, I was amazed that General Manager Yamauchi remembered my face and name. Second, the food — king crab, abalone, and other premium items you wouldn't normally find on other cruise ships, served almost daily. Third, I'm an early riser, and walking around the ship each morning is my routine, so I got to know the staff and had a wonderful time. Lastly, on a personal note, cruises longer than two weeks can be a bit hard on me, so I kept getting off and back on again. When Viking returns in 2028, I definitely plan to sail again — I look forward to it! #MyVikingStory

The Restaurant

The Viking Yidun warmly welcomed us as an early celebration of our upcoming 30th wedding anniversary. The waffles at Manfredi's, carefully made to order; the miso soup prepared with freshly drawn dashi every morning; the herring roe in matsumae-style marinade served as an amuse-bouche—each dish reflected a true commitment to authenticity that deeply moved us. I'll also never forget how so many crew members remembered my name from the moment I boarded. While Viking Yidun operates under the brand's rigorous global standards, my time on board revealed a vessel with a distinct personality. I was particularly impressed by the captivating Chinese elements that set her apart from any other ship in the Viking fleet. With Chinese chefs on board, I was able to enjoy authentic congee, dim sum, tantanmen at the Pool Grill, and hot and sour soup at The Chef's Table—a wonderful variety of Chinese cuisine unique to the Yidun. At the same time, the lobster—a Western classic—was consistently excellent, standing alongside the wagyu and châteaubriand as true highlights. Each dish showcased masterful cooking techniques. The lobster I had on this occasion was absolutely the finest. The attention to detail was evident throughout: the abalone and king crab sourced at ports of call, the thoughtful Japanese-language menus, and even the miso soup carefully prepared from scratch by a Japanese chef. I was deeply moved by the heartfelt service of the staff and the warm hospitality of everyone in the restaurant team, including Manager Hamada. #MyVikingStory
